Immigration Physical Q & A

Gilroy Family Medical Group

What is an Immigration Physical?

The United States has specific regulations governing the admission of those who enter the country. These regulations are designed to not allow infections to spread to citizens of this country. Specific credentials are required to ensure that the doctor providing the exam is state certified and able to carry out the requirements of the state. Doctors will do a complete physical exam, blood test, and X-ray of the patient.  While this is not something that immigrants would prefer to experience, the doctors at Gilroy Family Medical Group are skilled in providing these exams with compassion and dignity for the patient.

Does the Patient Need to Prepare for an Immigration Physical?

Patients should prepare for the immigration exam by gathering documentation regarding his or her medical history. The patient will need to take vaccination records, certificates of successful treatment for illnesses, including tuberculosis and syphilis, and information like the dates of most recent screenings and tests showing successful treatment. If the patient has any special needs due to physical or intellectual deficiencies, the doctor will need to see a report regarding the condition as well as any special educational or supervision requirements. If the patient has any history of harmful behavior to himself or herself or others, including animals and inanimate objects, the doctor will need to see the medical records showing that the behavior was linked to mental or psychological disorders and certification of treatment, including the diagnoses, length of treatment, and current state of well-being. Any chronic conditions or illnesses will need to be evidenced with information regarding diagnoses and treatment, including details of medications.

What Vaccinations are Required for Immigration?

The United States government requires that those applying for immigration show evidence of a wide range of vaccinations to protect public health.
